The Joining Forces Campaign is a non-profit initiative created by former Sapper Matthew Weston, retired, and Katharine Collins, founder of the British Filmmakers Alliance. Its main aim is to unite filmmakers with armed forces veterans for the benefit of all involved.
While any profits will support charities or be driven back into the JF to enrich the lives of further servicemen and women, the main benefit is the new life experiences, potential alternate career options and the sense of solidarity, camaraderie and unity our veterans get to experience through the medium of filmmaking.
Films made through the Joining Forces Campaign would not have been possible without the belief of our colleagues and friends who get behind us and supported us via a series of social endeavours, pub quizzes, sponsored walks, games nights which raised the funds needed to make films in a fair, safe and non exploitative way.
The Great British Challenge is our way of widening that net! Hosting more all-encompassing, high volume, country wide challenges, contests, tournaments, singles events and competitions will allow us to make further films, give more opportunities not only for veterans to be involved but for filmmakers, writers and actors to find the ever elusive opportunities to work on projects that will promote their talents, all the while raising money for charities, make the JF a more far reaching campaign and enriching the lives of our veterans.
Matthew joined Katharine on the set of the British Filmmakers Alliance feature film ‘The Spoiler’. He came to love the experience, especially when he got to fire a gun with the other cast members and terrified the sound department.
We soon realised there was something in the experience and soon after the Joining Forces Campaign was born.
The Joining Forces Campaign recreates the feeling of solidarity for servicemen and women who are so missing the bonds of their brothers and sisters and would relish the chance of being a team, all pulling together in the same direction, fighting for the same common purpose again.
The initiative is particularly cathartic to veterans suffering the hell of PTSD.
One young veteran hadn’t left his flat for six years due to the condition. But when we invited him to be part of Love of Words, our first film, he found the strength to overcome his anxiety and join us
Love of Words was the most joyous shoot many of the cast and crew had ever been on. This was totally down to the involvement of the veterans we had alongside us. Any opportunity for filmmakers or actors to exploit their talents are relished. But the added advantage for us was to be working alongside a group of people for whom no challenge is too great, no problem is insurmountable, and nothing is more important than the person either side of them.

Anyone, anywhere, anytime! We’re asking our whole country to become involved in order to make The Joining Forces Campaign a far reaching, long lasting success for veterans, actors, filmmakers and film lovers alike.
